I’ve recently introduced you to a fresh new artist called KAY who is currently gearing up to release her debut album later this year. With a brand new EP already out on iTunes, she’s about to announce when she will be hitting the stage. Anyway, I would like to thank KAY and Keith (@Waffles+Falafels) for making this interview happened.
Hi, Kay! How are you?
I’m wonderful, thanks!
Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
My name is Kay and I’m a singer and a rapper from Nova Scotia, on the East Coast of Canada.
Has music always been a big part of your life?
Definitely! Growing up on the East Coast, there was a lot of Celtic music. Then in high school I discovered Hip-Hop and became an MC for awhile. Everything has always been about music. That’s been the one constant my entire life.
When did you first start singing?
Like pretty much every singer, I started singing shortly after talking. I think I probably had my first gig when I was 5. So yeah- it’s been a long time!
What are your inspirations?
My friends, travel. Lately I’ve been flying a lot between Vancouver and Los Angeles. I love L.A.! It’s definitely become a huge inspiration. As for other inspirations, it varies; some days it’s my mood, other days it could be something on the news. It could be Donald Trump that’s interesting me!
Can you tell us about your debut album? Who you’re working with and will there be any collaboration on the album?
I’m really blessed to have worked with a lot of amazing people like Organized Noise, Ryan Tedder and Evan Bogart. As far as collaborations go, there’s actually some really, really big ones on the album I can’t say yet but I’m really excited for people to hear!
How would you describe your music?
At the end of the day it’s Pop, but my love for hip-hop is definitely in there as well. I would love to be in the same grouping as artists like Nelly Furtado, Missy Elliott, Outkast, and TLC. They’re some of my favourites.
What kinds of response are you hoping to get from people out there?
All positive ones! Can you imagine? That would be amazing! Seriously though, some of the songs are very heartfelt and personal so I hope I can surprise some people.
Can we expect any live performances any time soon?
I’m actually booking summer tour dates right now so I’ll probably be announcing those within the next few weeks.
You’ve recently worked with Ryan Tedder on one of your tracks off of your EP—what was that like? Did he approach you?
I’ve been working with Ryan Tedder for a really long time. He’s a genius; one of the most talented people I’ve ever worked with in my life. In fact, Ryan Tedder was the person who got me signed!
What’s currently playing on your iPod?
I’m always listening to something by OutKast. “Time” by Chase & Status. Ciara’s “Ride”- love that track! And Mambo No. 5- no i’m just kidding.
What’s your guilty pleasure?
Chocolate chip cookies and grilled cheeses!
What do you want to say to your fans?
I love you guys and I can’t even tell you how amazing it is getting support from people. It seriously means the world to me. You guys are everything, so thank you.
What do you think about the music industry nowadays?
Like every other industry, it’s always changing. But it’s the only music industry I know, so coming up at this point and time, I’m fine with it. I’m a musician so I’d be doing this no matter what- always!
Do you have any advice for people who are trying to make it into the music industry?
Of course! Personally I looked at musicians I loved, read their bios, found out what they did to make it, then tried to emulate them, so I just say go for it!
